Wines With Traditions

Moldawien

Wine in Moldova or Moldavia has been an integral part of Moldovan culture for many millennia. The wines of the new generation of winemakers are closely intertwined with a long and complex history. Moldovan wines have gained recognition on the world market, and their blends of international and indigenous grape varieties offer unique flavor profiles for wine drinkers around the globe.

Moldova’s long history of winemaking began around 3000 BC. Since then, wine and its grapes have been deeply rooted not only in Moldovan soil but also in the culture, myths, and folklore of this country. Situated between Romania and Ukraine, near the Black Sea, the climate is more continental. Geographically at the same latitude as France and with long, warm summers, both red and white grapes thrive equally well.

In addition to classic international grape varieties such as Merlot, Pinot Noir, Cabernet, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc, local varieties also find their way into the bottle – often as blends. Fetească Albă and Fetească Regală (“white” and “royal maiden grape”) with their characteristic floral aromas are typical of the Codru region and are perfect for fresh-fruity white and sparkling wines. In the Valul Lui Traian (Trajan’s Wall) and Ştefan Vodă regions, red indigenous grape varieties are cultivated. Feteasca Neagra (“black maiden grape”), with its typical flavors of berries, pepper, and light tannins, as well as Rară Neagră (“black grandmother grape”), with fresh aromas of dried fruits and vanilla, are very old varieties and give Moldovan wines an unmistakable character.

Chateau Cristi History

Chateau Cristi has a long and rich history in the production of superior quality wines. Its name is associated with a notable personality from Moldova, Vladimir Cristea, a descendant of a noble lineage and state dignitaries.

Born into a wealthy family, Vladimir Cristea pursued studies in law and agriculture at prestigious universities in Moscow and Montpellier. Becoming a viticulture and winemaking enthusiast, Vladimir Cristea became a member of the Viticulture and Winemaking Committee of Orhei County in 1910, contributing to reforms and facilitations for the population involved in viticulture.

Thus, Chateau Cristi was founded in 1939, reviving the winemaking recipes of the Cristi family. Its vineyards are located in southern Moldova, in the famous Valul lui Traian territory, known for its renowned grapes, which offer select bouquets and aromas of flowers and dried fruits, as well as an exceptional taste to the wines produced.

Over time, Chateau Cristi has continued to pass on the passion and dedication for winemaking from generation to generation, ensuring that the finest and most select wines reach consumers’ tables. One of the legendary blends in the Chateau Cristi range is Cabernet Sauvignon – Merlot – Malbec, renowned for its regal quality.

Today, Chateau Cristi is known as a winery with centuries-old traditions and represents a declaration of love for fine wine enthusiasts. Each bottle of Chateau Cristi wine preserves the spirit and passion of the Cristi family, bringing together history and innovation to create distinguished wines of superior quality.
